Melon Berry Smoothie

Ingredients

  • 1 cup watermelon, peeled, deseeded and cut into cubes

  • 1 cup frozen red raspberries, washed

  • ˝ cup seedless red grapes, washed

  • 1 cup cold water

  • 1 cup ice cubes 

Directions 

  1. Add the watermelon into the blender.

  2. Add raspberries.

  3. Add grapes.

  4. Pour in cold water.

  5. Place ice cubes on top.

  6. Cover the blender and puree until smooth.

  7. Serve in a tall glass and drink immediately.

Smoothies for weight loss are a highly nutritious and satisfying snack that won’t wreck your diet. You can use seasonal fresh fruits, canned fruit, vegetables, and whatever flavorings you like.  Add a splash of low fat yogurt or some soy milk if you prefer a creamier smoothie.

Fresh fruits and vegetables are full of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, and with the low calories and no fat what could be healthier? Fruit gives instant energy, strengthens the immune system, burns more calories to digest than it contains, has lots of fiber, and just plain tastes good. And in the summertime nothing is more refreshing than a tall smoothie brimming with fruit.

How to make smoothies

Use 2 cups of your favorite seasonal fruit, a cup of crushed ice, a couple of tablespoons of yogurt if you prefer, and blend on high speed. You can also use sprigs of fresh mint, a dab of vanilla, some honey for sweetening, or a splash of rum. Your smoothie is only limited by your imagination and palate preferences. Some favorites include a cup of strawberries and a cup of banana, or a cup of pineapple with a cup of blueberries.

Other ingredients perfect for smoothies are:

·         Any type of melon

·         Your favorite veggies

·         Flavorings like lemon zest, cinnamon, extracts such as butter, vanilla, rum

·         Non-fat coffee flavorings

·         Your favorite herbs

If you keep fresh fruit on hand you can blend up your smoothie in less than 10 minutes. Try variations and sneak a veggie in that you don’t particularly like, or that you would like to get your kids to eat. With the fruit and added flavors chances are you won’t notice the flavor of the veggie.

The benefits of raw foods have had a lot of attention lately, and smoothies are a great way to have raw vegetables. Try spinach or cubes of sweet potatoes with the sweetness of apples.
